Epitome PvP and Dueling
1v1 duels, open PvP, and later faction warfare — all while the store page still says Coming soon.
Epitome markets itself as an action MMORPG with PvE and open PvP, not a purely PvE theme park. Steam still says Coming soon. Kickstarter backers sit in a test build. This page is the PvP reading guide: what public coverage says landed in that pre-alpha near the campaign close, what remains sandbox talk, and how you should practice without treating a closed test as a live ladder.
If you do not have a login, read how to get pre-alpha access first. If you do, pair this article with controls and combat so you are not dueling with a kit you cannot execute.
What testers actually got around Kickstarter close
Massively Overpowered’s March 2026 wrap-up of the funded campaign described a pair of pre-alpha updates that added 1v1 PvP dueling, monster-spawning monoliths, portals to random dungeons, and a new boss monster, with smaller patches posted on Discord. That is the dated public snapshot this wiki will use. It is not a Steam patch note, and it is not proof every later Discord hotfix is still in your client.
Read dueling as a consensual 1v1 mode sitting beside open-world contact, not as a replacement for it. Open PvP was already in the campaign’s “systems in the slice” list: you can meet other players in the field without a queue. Dueling is the cleaner test of a rotation. Open PvP is the messy one, where potions, path identity, and whether a Ninja ever got a Shadow Trail actually matter.
Do not flatten those two into one rank. A Path of the Soul Warrior who lives through a gank can look slow in a duel timer. A Path of Assassination Ninja who wins the first two seconds of a duel can evaporate the moment a third player walks in. The starter path rankings keep those columns separate for that reason.
Open PvP on a slice, not a continent
Campaign recaps of the current world keep citing one map (M1), two cities, four biomes, and play into the low twenties. Open PvP on that slice is a density experiment, not a realm-versus-realm campaign. Empty roads do not prove the design is PvE-only. Crowded squares do not prove the 33,000-player instance claim on Steam.
Faction banners still matter at vision level. After class, Steam asks you to join Aria or Zetia. The choose Aria or Zetia guide is the political version of this page. Kickstarter copy pointed at later guild and faction warfare and territory control. Those sentences are not a current siege manual. They live with the rest of the stretch talk on planned systems and the Kickstarter roadmap.
If you pick a kingdom because you want a color in PvP screenshots, that is a valid first-hour reason. If you pick a kingdom because a forum posted an S-tier faction war, you are reading a finished ladder into an unreleased MMO.
How to practice PvP without inventing a meta
A useful evening in the backer build looks like homework, not content creation:
- Confirm movement, auto-attack, and one path skill from controls and combat before you queue a duel. Dueling a kit you cannot press is a screenshot of your keyboard, not of Epitome.
- Duel once on your main path, then once on the other path of the same class if the client lets you respec or reroll cheaply. Body versus Soul, Assassination versus Tang, Light versus Darkness — those are Steam names, not nicknames.
- Take one open-world contact on purpose. Walk a road. Notice whether people flag, ignore, or pile. Write down whether potions and CC exist in the version you loaded. Do not turn that note into a “PvP is dead” essay.
- If a random dungeon portal or monolith is up, treat it as PvE with PvP gravity, not as an arena. Other players can contest a spawn. That is the point of putting portals in a shared field. Details sit on dungeons and portals.
- Stop before you grind a morality number that Morality Metrics will not publish. Advanced classes are a later PvP conversation. Steam still puts Necromancer and Elementalist behind that meter.
Hardware still matters. Frame time is a PvP stat. Skim system requirements if your duel looks like a slideshow.
What this page will not claim
It will not publish a live 1v1 tier list. Combat is unfinished; tester reports already split between a readable action loop and stubby feedback. It will not invent duel queue rules, rating, or seasonal rewards. It will not say Epitome is a public Steam PvP game. The store page still says Coming soon. A backer test server that stayed online after Kickstarter is not a launch.
It will also not treat community Metin comparisons as a studio slogan. Players use that shorthand for grind-and-open-world contact. The official pitch is AI NPCs, action combat, and a no pay-to-win claim next to Steam disclosures that already mention in-game purchases. Keep those sentences in different boxes.
When open alpha language becomes a dated Steam or epitomegame.com post, this page should gain a sentence and a link to Road to Open Alpha. Until then, practice the two PvP doors that public coverage already named — duels and open contact — and keep the rest of the war on the vision pile.
For class kits, use the classes hub. For maps and M2 talk, use world and maps. For the honest wishlist valve, use the first look. PvP in Epitome is already part of the advertised loop. It is not a finished sport, and it is not a reason to tell anyone the MMO has launched.
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers for wishlist, classes, and pre-alpha questions.
Is there ranked PvP on Steam right now?
No. Steam still says Coming soon. Public coverage described 1v1 dueling inside the Kickstarter backer pre-alpha, not a public ranked ladder.
What PvP modes exist in the test build?
Coverage of late-campaign patches named 1v1 dueling beside open-world PvP that was already on the slice feature list. Rules can still move. Verify in your client.
Does faction choice change PvP today?
Steam asks you to pick Aria or Zetia after class. Later sandbox talk includes faction warfare. Pre-alpha is still a small slice. Read [choose faction](/guides/choose-faction/) for vision, not for a live war score.
Which class is best for duels?
This wiki will not print a live duel meta. Compare kits on the [classes hub](/players/) and treat [starter path rankings](/tier-list/starter-paths/) as speculative.
Where do dungeons overlap with PvP?
Random dungeon portals and monoliths spawn in a shared world. Other players can contest them. See [dungeons and portals](/guides/dungeons-portals/).
